Abstract: When investors ask themselves how their portfolios have performed thus far this year, on the surface it seems like a straightforward question. However, that may not be the case, because a portfolio’s return over the short term provides little insight into whether the result was achieved through good decision making — or despite it. This article examines several metrics to help quantify a portfolio.
