Abstract: Many businesses are finding it more feasible to operate across state lines. But therein lies a risk: Doing so means possibly being subject to taxation in that state. This article reviews the concept of “nexus” and discusses the recent rise of “market-based sourcing.” A sidebar looks at the types of taxes that companies typically face in other states.
